Honestly, I will miss Peter Gammons. He is as old as baseball and his voice is a voice I grew up listening too. It like Sunday night baseball on a hot august night listening to John Miller and Joe Morgan. It doesn’t get any better.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a coach out there that is willing to jump ship from his current team that is ready for this job. This job is, by all accounts, the most high profile job in college football. It comes with the scrutiny similar to the manager of the New York Yankees. Your every move and every word is picked apart. Boosters, alumni and press will praise your early successes but quickly devour you as soon as you are defeated. Coming from UCONN, Cincinnati, and other small market schools who have seen recent success just doesn’t fit the bill to move to Notre Dame.

I hope I am wrong, but the coaches that are available, and not those who have ruled themselves out as the next coach of the Fighting Irish, are set up to fail.

I disagree, good coaches come from small markets.

Jim Tressel went to Ohio State from Youngstown st.

Urban Meyer went to Florida after Bowling Green and Utah.

Mack Brown went to Texas after Tulane and North Carolina

Success as a Head Coach in the small markets is a great indicator of great recruiting skills, being able to retain a smart and loyal staff and being able to coach players and manage games.

Everyone wants Meyer now, but he was doing the same thing he’s doing now when I saw him in Bowling Green, Ohio, just no one thought he was proven enough yet.

What is most important in a job search is finding a character guy with proven results in whatever conference he is in, and giving him time to do his thing.

This wouldn’t be an issue if they had done that 5 years ago and left Ty Willingham* as coach.

*Also I don’t buy that Ty Willingham’s failure at Washington justifies Notre Dame’s choice. Washington was 1-10, (0-8) before Ty came, and Ty recruited the consensus #1 pro prospect QB for 2010, Jake Locker. But like Brady Quinn before, Ty was not able to coach his star QB recruit as a senior.

I completely agree that good coaches come from small markets. No one starts out at Texas, USC or Notre Dame. My point was I don’t think any of the coaches out there right now in those small markets are ready for Notre Dame. That’s all.
